hi, i’m marc

I’m a Creative Director / Copywriter with more than 25 years of experience helping brands figure out what to say and why anyone should care.

I’ve worked in healthcare and Medicare, sold hotel stays and heavy equipment, and spent a lot of time figuring out how to make complicated businesses easier to care about.

I’ve worked at agencies in Atlanta, Charlotte and Chicago, and now I’m the Executive Creative Director / Copywriter at Cummings Creative Group in Birmingham, Alabama.

Me Write Copy is where I take on select independent projects based on availability. If a project needs a bigger bench, I can bring in the full crew at CCG.

The Chicago to Birmingham Story

Marc Engel and his wife on their wedding day

I’m often asked, “How did you go from Chicago to Birmingham, Alabama?”

My answer is always the same, “A woman.”

I left Chicago for Atlanta to attend the Portfolio Center (aka Miami Ad School) so I could land more creative roles in marketing and advertising. After graduation, I stuck around Atlanta, started working, and met my future wife at a going-away party I threw for my roommate.

We moved around and eventually made our way back to Chicago.

We loved Chicago. We could walk to any kind of food. We had great friends. Lake Michigan was our quiet place. It’s where we became dog parents.

And then we became parents to a little human. And everything changed.

The winters felt colder. The traffic felt longer. The cost of living felt heavier. It just didn’t fit the dream we were building.

Then one brutally cold March day in 2009, my wife looked at me and said, “Your daughter and I are moving to Birmingham. You and the dog are welcome to join us.”

And that’s how I ended up in Birmingham, Alabama in November 2009.

I often say you can take me out of Chicago, but you’ll never take the Chicago out of me. And deep dish is pizza!
